This strategy is played out countless times in countless arenas. This of course has changed over the course of history, where initially, many centuries ago, it was just plain “attack”We want your territory, we have a bigger army, so we just attack. Then when this proved to be ‘unethical’ a change of plan was
introduced. Abuse the potential enemy with threats, false(invariably) accusations, and provocation and when they respond/retaliate (or not), attack. The justification being their response. And our final one is to play the diplomacy card first to show the ‘humanitarian’ side. ‘We want to persuade you to agree with us because we want an amicable solution. When this fails, fall back to plans B(abuse) and C(attack).
The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, or ‘NATO’ as it is also known, is an agreement between a group of countries regarding their common goals towards ‘defence’ of their combined nations against attack, primarily from Russia (The former Soviet Union).
The problem with this is that the acronym is misleading. It should read as the ‘North American Treaty Organisation’ due to the fact that it revolves 100% around North America. Namely The USA. Harking back to the title of the article, all the resolutions which the organisation make do not see the light of day unless the American reps agree to them. Hardly a democracy. Hardly a treaty.
Recent events in Turkey, the killing of a dissident journalist inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, have brought into focus the war between governments, and those who would criticise them. Freedom of speech is the foundation of many societies, while in others it is the ‘death knell’ for those who openly, and in some cases, those who ‘secretly’ speak out.
Religion, and the church in it’s various forms has been with us for the past few millennium.
Followers of the various religions, whether Catholic, Muslim, Hindu, Jew, etc…, are believers in the stories which were written down, and continue to be passed down through the generations.
Although the things claimed have never actually been witnessed, except at the time they happened (ie; miracles), the religions base their beliefs on these events, and the teachings of such events.
Newspapers, radio, TV, magazines, blogs, the internet. All of these things are sources of news. We have never had so much choice as to where we receive our news from.
With the emergence several decades ago, of media corporations, who own many outlets of news, we have become more and more subject to the views of the people who own these organisations.
I am writing this article because of a recent encounter I had with some fellow Brits. From my previous sentence you can guess that I myself am also a Brit(English). I live in the Philippines, which has an increasing number of expatriates from many countries. The 3 most prominent regions being, The USA, Europe(UK), and Australia.
Having been raised within a religious environment, my early life was intertwined with the church, and belief.
Church and Sunday School were an integral part of my childhood. The bible played a prominent role not only in the home, but also as a part of elementary, and junior school life.
A bit of background about my thoughts on religion. I have always, or at least as far as I can remember questioned things I see as false, or which lack rhyme or reason. Religion is one of those things.
I was automatically a believer when young, because it was instilled in me from my environment. However, as I approached my teenage years, I had questions burning inside which never seemed to be satisfied with the ‘explanations’ which were all around, and also provided to me.
